Exploring Watercolor Mediums

By Cards

onlinecardclass4

Hi all,

I’m back with multiple cards to share with you all in one day! Surprise!

When it comes to watercolor, there are just a ton of ideas and techniques out there in the world. It can absolutely be overwhelming, but that only inspires me to explore mediums and try out different techniques. I used different mediums for each card and strathmore coldpress watercolor paper for each painting.

For the first card, I used distress markers. I decided to use my Tim Holtz distress markers to create a globe and then added in a highlight around to create that ‘glow’ type feel. Such a pretty card, and it’s as simple as a hand drawn circle and loose watercoloring. The sentiment is a set from Hampton Arts and Jillybean. Love the scripty font!

On the second card, I used a more traditional medium. In my opinion, traditional mediums are more like pan sets, tubes, and inks with high pigmentation. For this I used my distress ink pads. These are different from the markers in that they are more concentrated colors and put out a lot more ink than the markers would. I embraced the concept of free-flowing ink by saturating the paper with quite a bit of water. I absolutely loved the way his one turned out! I can’t believe how uniform the images look together, but individually I just let each shape do it’s own thing.

On this last card I used watercolor pencils. I tried multiple stamped images with this technique (as you’ll see in the first photo). To get the look of free flowing ink I colored slightly outside the lines. Typically, I’m one that always likes to keep cards neat and tidy. This type of quick coloring is totally out of my comfort zone! But there is beauty in going outside those barriers isn’t there? How inspiring!

So this wraps up what’s going on in the craft room and I hope you enjoyed taking a quick look at my projects and practice pieces. I’ll talk with you all real soon. In the meantime feel free to come follow me over on instagram (jolie_samuel) where I post even  more daily happenings of the craftroom and life.

Have a great weekend!

Holiday Cards – Clean & Simple

By Cards

Hi all,

I’m excited for my favorite holiday that is coming just around the corner – Christmas! To give myself a kick-start in creating cards I signed up for an online card class. Each day is filled with amazing inspiration and techniques that just make me want to sit and create for hours. I absolutely love it!

Today’s cards and lessons inspired me to create cards that follow a clean and simple theme. There are many ways to achieve this type of card style here are 2 techniques I tried.

One way is by using score lines and minimal colors. I shadowed the score lines from the ornament piece onto the card base as well (it’s very faint in the photo, but looks soft and subtle in person).

For the second card, I tried a tone on tone look. Here I chose 2 shades of red to create a background. For an added pop of color, I used a blue card base and a white banner to hold my sentiment.

Such a fun style to create and the possibilities are truly endless. I can’t wait to share tomorrow’s class projects with you all as well.

Holiday Cards – Cute and Whimsical Cards

By Cards

Hi all,

Today’s card theme for Holiday Style is to create a card that is cute or whimsical. Here’s the card I came up with to contribute to the class.

The piece is watercolored using distress inks. I loved the look so much that I decided to make this a mass produced card!

Holiday Cards – Soft & Subtle

By Cards

Hi all,

We’re in full swing of cards here on the blog and I wanted to share with you cards that I consider soft & subtle for the holiday season.

First, I have a watercolor card. I created the background using distress inks and ended up loving the painting so much that I created duplicates!WatercolorSentiment2

I heat embossed a snowflake design on some and left others with a simple sentiment. WatercolorSentiment1

Next, I went for a more classic theme. Here I have an illustrated image that I lightly colored using the same distress inks.Winterscape1

To add some shimmer and shine, I used a glitter brush on the roof of the church and on the trees. I tried to captuer this as best as possible in the photo. It looks so pretty in the light!

These cards were also created in bulk!
